How To Check For Fake University Degree?

Education plays a vital role in one’s future. Since having a good education ensures one’s career and financial stability. It also ensures that their family will get the same education and make society a better place. But with the vast number of educational institutions in the country, it may get difficult to know which university/degree is worth it and which isn’t. Getting enrolled in a fake university will get you a worthless fake university degree. Thus, this article intends to help you detect the difference between a real and a fake university degree.

Which institutions can award an authentic degree in India?

In our country, there are five types of educational institutions which can award you an authentic degree. These are as follows:

Central Government Universities

There are around 50 such centrally funded universities in the country. The central government looks after the administration as well as funding for these institutions. Usually, every state and union territory has such a government-funded university. Although, sometimes, there maybe more. For instance, Delhi has five government-funded universities. They are IGNOU, Jamia Millia Islamia University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, South Asian University and Delhi University.

State Universities

The State Government is responsible for the administration and looking after of these universities. For Example, Rajasthan has the following state universities – Rajasthan Technical University, Kota, Jainarain Vyas University, Jodhpur, Dr S Rdhakrishnan Ayurved University, etc. At the end of 2018, there were 394 State Universities in India.

Deemed-to-be University

These are not actual universities but the University Grants Commission (UGC) sees them as fit to award degrees. These are usually private institutions which the UGC deems to be fit as a university. Hence, they have permission to award degrees. There are 125 such institutions in India. Some examples in Rajasthan are Banasthali Vidyapith and LNMIIT.

Private University

These are private educational institutions which are run by private organizations. Once they get UGC’s approval, they are able to award degrees too. India has 325 private universities. The complete list of private universities is available on the UGC website. Some examples in Rajasthan are Amity University and Jodhpur University.

Autonomous Institutes

The Central Government has given these institutes the power to run on their own. They create their own courses, conduct their own examinations and run the full administration on their own. Examples are IIT, NLU, IIM, IIIT and IISR. These institutes also have the power to award their own degree. Additionally, 102 institutes of national importance fall under this category as well. These have gotten the right to award degree through a Parliamentary Act. Some examples are given below.

Affiliated Institutes

Any institute which does not fall in the above five categories has to be an affiliate to one of them to be able to award a degree. Upon passing such institutions, students do not get the institute name’s degree. Rather they get the degree of the university which the college is an affiliate to.

Importance of Universities

Although one might say that since so many colleges award the degree of the university, so it does not really matter which college you attend, that is not the case. Since each college has its own reputation. Each college provides its own set of advantages such as curriculum, extracurricular, mentoring, infrastructure, placements, etc. Hence, it does matter which college you attend, because your level of education received will depend on the tier that the college belongs to.

What is a Fake University Degree?

These institutions call themselves as a “University” but they have not received any approval from UGC for the same. The degrees which these institutes award are worthless and will not help you in the future. It is best to beware of such institutes and not enrol in them for any degree. To check whether your university is valid or fake, follow these steps:

  • Visit the UGC website.
  • Under the University tab, you can see all the lists given for all educational institutions in the country.
  • Click on the option for Fake University to see the institutions listed. These institutes award fake university degree which is of no help at all.
