Did you know that among the top 100 jobs of USA, a yoga teacher ranks 10th? The average salary of a yoga teacher in the Us is almost Rs 42 lakh pa! Today, the net worth of yoga as a business in the whole world is $80 billion. Of this, India has a gross of about Rs 8000 crore. India itself needs about 3 lakh yoga teachers. And, yoga as a business is the 4th fastest growing business in the world. So, what we mean to say is that Yoga is here to stay! And you could make this a lucrative source of income for yourself!

3 reasons why being a Yoga teacher is a lucrative career:

  • Training Cost – the training charges of becoming a certified yoga teacher is quite minimum. It does not require lakhs of rupees to get your yoga career started.
  • Set Up Cost – The setup cost is not high since you can begin teaching at any room of your house or even your client’s house.
  • Can be done part-time – since yoga is usually done early morning or later evening, you can do this side by side your regular job.

Job opportunities in Yoga:

According to a study by Assocham, there is a vacancy for 3 lakh yoga teachers in India currently. Yoga teachers in India who do well are sent to China, South-East Asia, USA and other countries to teach. So what are the different job opportunities available if you learn yoga? We have mentioned some of these lucrative jobs below. The salary for these jobs range from Rs 5000 to Rs 50000 and sometimes to a lakh. If you happen to teach personal classes then you can easily earn Rs 3000 to Rs 12000, depending on the number of students and the hours.

Job Positions Available:

  • Yoga instructor/teacher – Instructor is generally the person who shows the exercises physically while the teacher is the one who verbally tells you what to do. One initially joins as an instructor and is later promoted to be a teacher. These professionals can teach yoga in personal classes, corporate houses, spas, studios, housing colonies, etc. some hybrid instructors also amalgamate another exercise form with yoga to teach you things like aqua yoga, Zumba yoga, aerobics yoga, etc. 
  • Yoga presenter – since you can teach yoga through any medium of TV, YouTube, etc. a yoga presenter helps to present the exercises on such mediums. Such a presenter needs to have command over the form and confidence to execute them well.
  • Yoga therapist – these people treat various diseases like diabetes, arthritis, hypertension, through special yoga asanas. They heal people from diseases through yoga therapy.
  • Yoga specialist – some cases of yoga need a specialist to execute them. Cases of post-natal yoga, pre-natal yoga, corporate yoga, child yoga, and senior citizen yoga require specialists to overlook them.
  • Academics – You can also become a yoga faculty or a yoga researcher. You can also do a PhD in yoga or become an assistant yoga professor in a yoga college.
  • Publication manager – publication on yoga need a publication manager. 
  • Yoga centre manager – there are many franchises and independent yoga centres today. Such centres require a centre manager who is knowledgeable about yoga and can look after the overall management. 

Courses in Yoga:

  • Bachelor courses are available in yoga post 12th standard –
    • BA (yoga, philosophy) – this is a 3-year course
    • UG diploma in yoga – this is a 1 to 1.5 years course with 6 months of practical training
    • Bachelor of naturopathy and yogic science – this is a 5.5-year course and is equivalent to being a doctor. You get the title of a Dr. and can practise naturopathy as well
  • Master courses in yoga –
    • PG diploma (yoga therapy) – this is a 1-year course
    • MA (yoga) – this is 2 years course
  • Teacher Training Program – If you have already done your previous academic courses in some other field, and wish to take up yoga professionally now, then you can also opt for a professional course known as a Teacher Training Program. This program teaches you the full course in 200 hours. Post this you become a certified yoga teacher.

Exams in Yoga:

Previously there was no such uniform exam held of yoga but the Ayush Ministry recently launched the QCI yoga exam. This exam is known as Scheme for Voluntary Certification of yoga professional by QCI ( Quality Control of India). This has 2 levels of exams. Level 1 is for instructor and level 2 is for the teacher. You can easily pass this exam by studying yoga for 3 to 6 months, and become a government certified yoga teacher. This exam occurs multiple times in a year in various cities of India. Having this QCI certification along with a yoga course degree and teaching experience makes you eligible to apply for government jobs in the yoga field.

  • Bihar School of Yoga

There are many Ayurvedic schools in the country too, who teach BAMS (Bachelor in Ayurveda & Medical Sciences). Many start-ups, like Zorba, also are getting into this field. Thus, this field is only going to get more prominent with time.
