Voter ID Online Application Process For Indian Citizens

According to the Constitution of India, each individual above the age of 18 years is eligible to have a Voter ID or election card. This card serves not only as eligibility for taking part in democratic election processes of the country but also as identification for every little thing requiring an identity proof. Earlier, citizens could only apply for their voter ID cards just before an election but now, thanks to the Election Commission of India, it has become very easy to apply for Voter ID cards via an online application form. In this article, we will take you through the steps required for Voter ID online application process.

Steps for New Voter ID Online Application:

  • Visit the website www.nvsp.in
  • The homepage has 6 options as follows –
    1. Apply online for registration of new voter/due to shifting from AC – this is applicable for new voter registration or when one is changing their constituencies.
    2. Apply online for registration of overseas voters – this is applicable for NRI’s living outside of the country
    3. Deletion or objection in electoral roll
    4. Correction of entries in electoral roll – applicable for people who want to make some changes to their Voter ID
    5. Transposition within assembly
    6. Track application status – to check the current status of your voter id online application, once it has been submitted.
  • Click on APPLY ONLINE FOR REGISTRATION OF NEW VOTER.
  • Form 6 will open.
  • Select LANGUAGE from Hindi/English/Malayalam options on the top right corner of the page.
  • Now fill in the following details –

Section 1: Application for inclusion of name in electoral role for first time voter or on shifting from on constituency to another constituency:

  • STATE – where the applicant is residing
  • DISTRICT – where the applicant is residing
  • ASSEMBLY – where the applicant is residing
  • Check the circle for AS A FIRST TIME VOTER or DUE TO SHIFTING FROM ANOTHER CONSTITUENCY, whichever is applicable for you

Section 2: Mandatory Particulars (corresponding Hindi translation will show automatically)

  • NAME – of the applicant
  • SURNAME – of the applicant
  • NAME OF RELATIVE OF APPLICANT – can be your father, mother, husband, wife, guru or other
  • SURNAME OF RELATIVE OF APPLICANT – surname of the relative named above
  • TYPE OF RELATION – your relationship to the relative mentioned
  • AGE – either give your age as on the 1st of January of the current year OR give your exact date of birth in the format of Date-Month-Year
  • GENDER OF APPLICANT – choose from MALE, FEMALE or THIRD GENDER
  • CURRENT ADDRESS details- STREET/AREA/LOCALITY, TOWN/VILLAGE, POST OFFICE, PINCODE, STATE/UNION TERRITORY, DISTRICT
  • PERMANENT ADDRESS – if same as Current Address then check box SAME AS ABOVE, else fill in the details separately.

Section 3: Optional Particulars

  • DISABILITY – if it applies then check from given options of VISUAL IMPAIRMENT, SPEECH & HEARING DISABILITY, LOCOMOTOR DISABILITY or mention OTHER
  • MAIL ID – optional, but we recommend to fill it in
  • MOBILE NO. – optional, but we recommend to fill it in

Section 4: Upload Supporting Documents

  • YOUR PHOTOGRAPH – your recent passport size photograph
  • AGE DECLARATION – this is not mandatory anymore and can be skipped
  • AGE PROOF – this can be a photograph or scan of any one of the following such as your birth certificate, mark sheet of class 10 or 8 or 5, Indian passport, PAN card, driving licence or Aadhaar card. Just ensure that all the details are clearly visible.
  • ADDRESS PROOF – this can be a photograph or scan of any one of the following such as your Indian passport, driving license, bank/kisan/post office current passbook, ration card, income tax assessment order, rent agreement, water bill, electricity bill, gas connection bill, post/letter/mail delivered through Indian Postal Department.

Section 5: Declaration

  • TOWN/VILLAGE – mention your town or village name
  • SELECT STATE – mention your state name
  • DISTRICT – mention your district name
  • DATE – mention the date from when you have been residing at your current address
  • Check either of following two options which apply to you – first option if you are registering for the first time or second option if you previously had already registered as a voter from one constituency but want to change your constituency now.
  • PLACE – mention name of your city
  • DATE – applies automatically
  • CAPTCHA – fill in the captcha given
  • SUBMIT – click to submit your form.

Upon successful submission of your form, you will receive a REFERENCE ID which can henceforth be used to track your application status, by going back to the homepage and selecting the option for TRACK APPLICATION STATUS.
