UPSC EPFO 2020 Exam | Preparation Analysis

The UPSC EPFO 2020 exam is scheduled to occur in October 2020. This exam will be for the hiring of Account Officers and Enforcement Officers. This article will discuss some important details about this exam. As well as what one should expect while taking this exam.

History of UPSC EPFO 2020 Exam

  • The exam has previously been held only 2 times in the last twenty years.
  • The last two exams were hed in 1999 and 2016-2017.
  • This is the third time this exam is taking place in the last twenty years.
  • The UPSC body will be conducting the exam.
  • The exam is scheduled for 4th October 2020.
  • There are 421 vacancies available for recruitment via this exam.
  • The age limit for entering this exam is 30 years.
  • A total of 10 lakh exam applicants have been received so far, which is double than last time.

Necessary qualifications

  • It is mandatory to have a Bachelors degree in any subject to be applicable for this exam.
  • Apart from this, it is also desirable to have a Bachelor’s degree in any one of the following subjects: Law/ Integrated five years degree in Law/ MBA/ PGDM/ CS/ CA/ CMA.
  • It is also desirable to have two years worth of experience in administration/ accounts/ legal matters in any government or listed private organization.
  • But even if you do not fall into the desirable category of education or experience, you should still go ahead with your exam preparation. Since 75% of weightage of the result depends on the written exam and 25% on the interview.
  • Moreover, in the past two exams, many candidates not belonging to the desired category, went ahead to clear the exam and hold respective positions at EPFO.

What is the pay scale?

  • Candidates who clear the UPSC EPFO 2020 exam will enter level 8 in the pay matrix as per the 7th CPC (General Central Service Group ‘B”; Non-Ministerial)
  • The gross salary will range between Rs 67,000 – Rs 75,000 per month, initially.
  • Further increments are to be expected.

What is the exam pattern?

  • The written exam of UPSC EPFO 2020 will be 2 hours long.
  • It will have a total of 120 questions.
  • All questions will be MCQ based and will have equal marks.
  • The exam paper will be available in Hindi and English.
  • Each incorrect answer will get negative marking. One-third of the marks of the particular question will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
  • Leaving a question unanswered will not attract any negative marking.

What is the exam syllabus?

The UPSC EPFO 2020 exam will cover the following topics:

  • General English
  • Indian freedom struggle
  • General mental ability and quantitative aptitude
  • Indian polity and economy
  • General accounting principles
  • General science and knowledge of computer applications
  • Current events and developmental issues
  • Social security in India
  • Industrial relations and labour laws

Although, it is important to note that ‘Social Security in India’ and ‘Industrial Relations & Labour Laws’ are two topics which are unique to this examination. These two topics itself hold 20% weightage in the total written exam paper. Hence, if you pay special attention to them, along with the other topics, you are bound to rank well in the exam.

What is the weightage for final selection?

In the previous exams, the written exam held 50% and the interview held 50% weightage. But, the UPSC EPFO 2020 exam will have 75% weightage on written exam and 25% weightage on the interview.

What are the job roles?

The UPSC EPFO 2020 exam will hire candidates for Account Officer and Enforcement Officer positions. Both the job roles will be transferrable for the selected candidates. These job profiles will be as follows:

  • Account Officers (AO)
    • Main work is to deal with employee-related matters as well as accounts.
    • It is a back-office working position.
    • Some public relation handling which requires handling of enquiries of people visiting the office.
  • Enforcement Officer (EO)
    • They are more commonly known as PF Inspectors.
    • Main work is to deal with employers and establishments. This includes any search, cease or audit work.
    • This is more of a field job which requires visiting their own office only for reporting.
