The Modern Slavery System That No One Talks About

The world moves forward, but some systems still hold people back. One such system is the Kafala System, which operates in several Middle Eastern countries, trapping millions of migrant workers in conditions that can only be described as modern slavery.

What Is the Kafala System?

The Kafala System is a labour framework where private citizens or companies act as sponsors (Kafeels) for migrant workers. These sponsors have nearly complete control over the workers’ employment and immigration status. This system has led to extreme exploitation, abuse, and even loss of lives.

The Dark Reality of Migrant Workers

During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the world got a glimpse of how dangerous this system is. Reports revealed that around 6,500 migrant workers lost their lives due to harsh conditions. But the truth is, these conditions have existed for decades.

  • Low Wages, No Freedom: Workers are often paid below the minimum wage and are not allowed to switch jobs without their employer’s permission.
  • Long Hours, No Rest: Many work for 14 to 18 hours a day, under extreme heat, with no proper breaks or basic facilities.
  • Overcrowded & Unhygienic Living Conditions: Hundreds are crammed into small dormitories, forced to sleep on floors without proper sanitation.
  • No Legal Protection: Many workers lose possession of their passports, making them completely dependent on their Kafeels. If they try to raise their voice, they are declared illegal immigrants.
  • Health Neglect: Workers do not receive regular health checkups, leading to sudden deaths from untreated illnesses and exhaustion.

Why Do People Still Go?

The answer is simple – desperation. Many leave their homes with dreams of earning a better income for their families. But instead of opportunity, they find themselves trapped in a system that offers no escape.

How Can We Help End This Oppression?

  • Raise Awareness: Most people are unaware of the severity of this issue. Sharing real stories and spreading awareness can help put pressure on governments to take action.
  • Stronger Labour Laws: Countries benefiting from migrant labour need to enforce strict labour protections and abolish the Kafala System.
  • Support Ethical Employment: Employers should be held accountable for fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for workers’ rights.
  • International Action: Global organizations and governments must step in to protect migrant workers from abuse and ensure fair treatment.

Final Thoughts

The Kafala System is not just a labour issue; it is a human rights crisis. Every worker deserves dignity, fair wages, and the right to a safe working environment.

It is time to demand change and put an end to this modern-day slavery.

Are you willing to raise your voice against this injustice?
