Mindblowing Facts About The Statue Of Unity!

India’s Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, unveiled the Statue of Unity on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 143rd birth anniversary. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was India’s first Home Minister who has the credit of uniting 562 princely states during pre-independent India to form the Republic of India. Facts about Statue of Unity first announcement was made on October 7th, 2010, by the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, Mr. Modi. The state government fully funded the Rs 3,050 crore project.

1. Location:

The statue’s location is on the river, Sadhu Bet, near Rajpipla on the Narmada river. It faces the Narmada Dam. A 3-star lodging facility, a food court, a memorial garden and a grand museum are present within 20,000 square metres of the statue. The statue will have a 12 sq km artificial lake surrounding it.

2. World’s Tallest Statue:

At 182 metres, facts about Statue of Unity is currently the tallest statue in the world, which previously was China’s Spring Temple Buddha statue at 153 metres. Facts about Statue of Unity towers over it by 29 metres and towers over the famous Statue of Liberty by 89 metres. The height of the base of the Statue of Unity alone is 58 metres.

3. The Weight of the Statue:

The construction of this statue took 70,000 tonnes of cement, along with 18,500 tonnes of reinforcement steel, 6000 tonnes of structural steel and 1700 tonnes of bronze metal plates. Nearly 100 million farmers in 169,000 villages across the country, gave approximately 129 tonnes of iron implements, for this statue’s construction.

4. 15,000 visitors every day:

The statue has a viewing gallery at a height of 153 metres . 200 people will be able to have a panoramic view of the nearby Sardar Sarovar Dam and the Satpura and Vindhyachal mountain ranges. Tickets for visiting this statue are available for booking online and are priced at Rs 350 and Rs 120. An estimated 15,000 visitors are expected at the statue every day.

5. Constructed with 33 months:

It took over 3,000 workers, including 300 engineers from Larsen & Toubro (L&T), to build the statue within a record period of 33 months.

6. Designed by Sculptor Ram V. Sutar:

Ram V. Sutar is a celebrated Indian sculptor. Furthermore, he was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan award in 2016 and the Padma Shri in 1999 for his contribution in the field of arts. He also has the credit of designing over 50 statues to his name.

7. Made of Bronze:

The innermost layer of the three-layered structure is constructed of reinforced cement concrete (RCC), steel and 8 mm bronze.

8. Only 9% construction in China:

The bronze cladding of the statue has been done by China’s famous Jiangxi Toqine Company (JTQ) because none of India’s bronze companies had the capacity to work on a project of this level. But according to L&T, only 9% of the statue’s construction costs went to China. Meanwhile, all the remaining work for it was done within India.

9. Super fast lifts:

Four high-speed lifts are present within the statue’s legs. Additionally, each lift can carry 26 people to the top of the statue in just 30 seconds.

10. The Iron Man of India:

The statue’s adjoining museum will be the world’s largest one to focus on the life of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It will display over 2000 photographs and over 40,000 documents.
