Introduction

In 1967, a remarkable moment took place between Air India and Salvador Dalí, the legendary surrealist artist. This story, involving a baby elephant and a unique ashtray, is one of the most interesting tales in aviation art history. Let’s dive into this fascinating connection, which still sparks curiosity today.

The Meeting of Dalí and Air India

In New York, Air India’s public relations officer, Jot Singh, met Salvador Dalí. Known for his strange and dreamlike style, Dalí was excited by Air India’s rich artistic history. Singh requested Dalí to design something special for Air India.

The Baby Elephant Deal

Dalí agreed to create 500 pieces of an exclusive ashtray. Its design was genius — upright, it looked like a swan, but upside down, it became an elephant head. But Dalí asked for a baby elephant as payment!

Air India took the challenge. They arranged travel papers from Bangalore Zoo and sent the elephant on a flight to Dalí’s village in Spain.

What Happened to the Elephant

The mayor of the village celebrated the elephant’s arrival with a three-day holiday. As the elephant grew too large, Dalí donated it to the Barcelona Zoo. In 2018, the same elephant passed away, closing a beautiful chapter of history.

The Famous Ashtray

Some of Dalí’s ashtrays went to Air India’s patrons, including King Juan Carlos of Spain. A few pieces still rest in Air India’s art collection. Others sometimes appear in online auctions, treasured by collectors.

What is Surrealism?

Dalí was a master of surrealism, an art form that blends dreams with reality in strange ways. Want to learn more? Tell us in the comments — what does surrealism mean to you?
