How to Claim Free Accidental Insurance with RuPay Card?

RuPay card owners get free accidental insurance as an additional benefit. However, many RuPay cardholders are not aware of this fact. RuPay card provides its owners with free lumpsum insurance in case of death or permanent total disability only. The maximum insurance claim amount differs according to the card. To provide the free insurance, RuPay card has tied up with two insurers. The tie-up with New India Insurance provides cover for the Non-Premium card category. Meanwhile, TATA AIG provides insurance for the Premium category RuPay cardholders. This article takes you through the process of claiming this free insurance.

Types of RuPay Cards

There are two categories of RuPay cards: Premium and Non-Premium.

Under the Non-Premium category there are 3 variations:

  1. Classic card
  2. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (Old) – if issued before 28.08.18
  3. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (New) – if issued after 28.08.18

Under the Premium category there are 2 variations:

  1. Platinum card
  2. Select RuPay card

Free Insurance Claim as Per RuPay Card

In case of death, cardholder will get the full assured sum. However, in case of accident, cardholder will get a certain percentage as per the disability, given below.

Eligibility Requirements for Free Insurance

Having one of the cards with assured insurance automatically makes one eligible for the insurance claim. There is no premium payment required. However, one can become disqualified from insurance claim, if one has not used their card for a specific period of time. For Non-Premium cardholders, this period is 90 days, while for Premium cardholders this period is 45 days.

Features to Remember

  • If one suffers an accident within 10-15 days of getting a RuPay card, then the time period for minimum card transaction is not taken into consideration and their free insurance claim is not rejected.
  • While Rupay pays annual premiums to its two insurers – New India Insurance and TATA AIG – for the financial years running from April of one year to March of the succeeding year, a cardholder’s claim insurance for April will not be rejected if the last transaction was made in March. Even if March is considered as part of the previous financial year, the transaction is counted within last 90 or 45 days as the case may be.
  • Since the insurance coverage provided is worldwide, one can claim insurance even if the accident or death occurs in another country.

How to Claim Free Insurance with RuPay Card?

Claim Process for Non-Premium Cardholders

  • Send an email to rupay@newindia.co.in with attached documents as required.
  • Take a photocopy of the email along with the documents and courier to New India in address given:

  • Claim should be filed within 90 days of the occurrence of the accident.
  • If New India asks for any additional supporting documents then they need to be provided within 60 days.
  • Once the investigation is completed by New India, it will transfer the insurance claim amount to the bank via NEFT within 10 days.

For Accidental Death Claim
  • Claim Form duly completed and signed.
  • Original or Certified copy of Death Certificate.
  • Original or Certified copy of FIR, Panchnama / Inquest Panchnama.
*Additional documents may be requested by The New India Assurance Co. Ltd. based on the case requirement such as Medical Reports, post mortem report, etc.

Declaration from Card Issuing Bank duly signed by authorized signatory and bank stamp:

  1. Declaration from Bank specifying that:
  • Cardholder is holding a RuPay card on RuPay issued IIN and mention the 16 digit card number.
  • Meeting 45 days usage criteria (include the transaction log from thesystem).
  • Nominee details (including NEFT details)
For Permanent Total Disability Claim
  • Claim Form duly completed and signed.
  • Discharge card along with case history confirmation therein duration & percentage of disability duly certified by the concerned/treating Physician/Surgeon.
  • All investigation report in original copies* thereof in respect of tests had undergone pertaining to accident.
  • Additional documents, if any, based on merit of the loss.

Declaration from Card Issuing Bank duly signed by authorized signatory and bank stamp

  1. Declaration from Bank specifying that
  • Cardholder is holding a RuPay card on RuPay issued IIN and mentionthe 16 digit card number.
  • Meeting 45 days usage criteria (include the transaction log from thesystem).
  • Beneficiary details (including NEFT details).

Claim process for Premium Cardholders

  • Follow the same steps as given above for non-premium cardholders but mail the same to rupay@tataaig.com
  • Then courier all documents to
