The days of chasing TTEs for vacant train berths will now be a thing of the past! IRCTC has recently taken the train reservations charts public. This move is aimed at making the Indian Railways system more transparent. This means that passengers will now be able to check train seat availability online on the IRCTC website or mobile app. Key features of the updates are as follows:
- IRCTC will display the entire train’s seating layout in different colours to shows seats that are booked, vacant or partially booked.

- The new update will be able to display the coach layout for 9 classes available in the reserved trains of the Indian Railways and over 120 different coach layouts have been included.
- You will be able to view class-wise as well as coach-wise vacant berth availability details according to the first chart of the train, which will be prepared 4 hours before the time of train departure.
- A second chart will also be prepared 30 minutes before the train’s departure, with the updated vacant berth availability information.

- Log on to the IRCTC website.
- On the left-hand side, click on Charts/Vacancy.

- Now, fill in the Journey Details by mentioning your concerned Train Name/Number, Journey Date and Boarding Station.

- Click on Get Train Chart. This will display the class-wise and coach-wise number of vacant berths which are currently available.

- Furthermore, you can click on a specific coach to view its layout as well as the berth-wise accommodation status as follows – grey means the berth is occupied for the full journey, yellow means the berth is occupied for half of the journey and greens means that the berth is completely unbooked.
Steps To Check Train Seat Availability On IRCTC Mobile App:
- Download the IRCTC mobile app and log in.
- From the dashboard icons, click on Charts/Vacancy.

- You will receive a prompt asking you to open this via Chrome or a different web browser which your phone has. Go on to click on Chrome and Just Once/Always, as per your preference.
- Fill in the Journey Details by mentioning your concerned Train Name/Number, Journey Date and Boarding Station.

- Click on Get Train Chart. This will display the class-wise and coach-wise number of vacant berths which are currently available.
- As before, you can click on a specific coach to view its layout as well as the berth-wise accommodation status as follows – grey means the berth is occupied for the full journey, yellow means the berth is occupied for half of the journey and greens means that the berth is completely unbooked.
