Best School Qualities To Look Before Admission

As a parent, the one thing that you always think about is the benefit of your child. One of the most important aspects of building your child’s future is imparting them a good education. A good education provides the building blocks for your child’s development. This is where selecting a good school for your child becomes necessary. The best school is not the one that is the most expensive. The best school is one which has good goals, vision, and mission. It must help in nurturing your child to prosper and helping them to realize their true potential.

Picking a school for your child should not be done on the basis of where your friends and family are educating their kids. You as a parent must do your own research and check what suits your financial and moral standing. In this article, we will help you in acknowledging some 9 points which you must take into account while picking a school for your child.

9 qualities for selecting a best school:

1. Location and safety

Your child will spend the next 12 to 15 years of his life. He will have to attend the school regularly for approx 240 days in a year. In this case, it means necessary to ensure that the school is in a location which is not very far away from your house. Having a school located an hour or so away would mean that your child will spend around 2 hours just in commuting to and back. He would have to wake up earlier than other kids to reach school on time. He would also return home later than other kids.

Furthermore, as your child moves on to higher classes, the pressure of studies increases. With additional tuitions to attend and extracurricular activities, there would be no time for your child to rest and rejuvenate, or to have the time to prepare well for his academics. Hence, a nearby school which reduces the time of travel is ideal.

The locality of the school is also extremely important. The nearby surroundings of the school must be safe to ensure that your child can freely walk, cycle or travel from there. If the school was to located on a highway, then this would post the danger of fast vehicles on the road. Choose a school where the traffic situation does not get bad or dangerous.

2. Option of boards

There is a multitude of board options available nowadays. The most prevalent is the CBSE. Other boards usually found are ICSE, IGCSE, IB, other regional state boards, etc. If you are in a transferable job then choosing a CBSE board school would be the smarter choice since CBSE board schools can be easily found everywhere in the country. The curriculum of CBSE boards is also best suited for preparing for future government colleges and big educational institutions. Similarly, each board has its own pros and cons. You need to do your research on these and choose a board which is most compatible with your child’s future goals.

3. Faculty quality and teacher to student ratio

Good teachers make the best school. The qualification and experience of the faculty of a school play a major role in making the school an exceptional one. Another thing to see is that the teacher to student ratio is maintained at 1:15 for the pre-primary level. For senior classes, a teacher to student ratio of 1:35 is optimum. This ensures that each child gets the teacher’s attention and each child is comfortable in his class. Having 70 or 100 kids in a school makes it difficult for each kid to make the most of the school’s resources available to them, due to the competition arising from having so many kids to look after.

4. Infrastructure

Your child will spend the next decade of his life in the school you pick for him. If this school lacks a good infrastructure then your child will be the one to suffer for the next decade. While picking a school make sure to check that the school building is well built, it has a good playground, clean washrooms, proper ventilation, lighting and furniture in classrooms, etc. This should also have education-related infrastructure like computer labs, modern libraries, fully equipped science laboratories. Additionally, having am ample sized playground helps your child to learn and play different sports. This will help him in honing his sports skills and he may even end up making a career out of it. But this can only happen if your child gets the opportunity to try his hand at all the options available.

5. Extracurricular activities

Extracurricular activities are as important as academics. They help the child to develop soft skills such as teamwork, bonding, sharing, innovation, etc, which help them in their future career. This should have the infrastructure, equipment as well as good faculty to impart such extracurricular activities. This should also be active in taking part in inter-school competitions. This can be seen from the distinctions and prizes received by the school’s students previously. Usually, schools with multiple branches have a nack of holding more inter-branch competitions. This helps the kids taking part in such competitions in improving their skills.

6. Modernity

This does not mean that the school has smart classrooms, projectors or faculty teaching via remote control devices. This stands for whether the school is giving the students proper computers to work on which have all basic programming for them to learn. Whether the school has fully equipped laboratories where students can perform most experiments without any hindrance. Modernity just for the sake of showing modern equipment is not enough. Those pieces of equipment should be fully functional and they should be taught by well-versed faculty too.

The purpose of school is to prepare the students for an uncertain future. It should not just be about moving from one standard to another. Rather it should be about personal development. which helps your child adapt well to everything that life throws at him is the perfect one for him.

7. Past results

Schools with good past results have a higher chance of doing well in future too. Hence, while researching, look into how the school’s students have fared in previous board exams, competitions, etc. to gauge how well it can help the future students.

8. Fees charged

Look into the fee structure of not only the current class but also of the higher classes. Usually, fees tend to increase with higher classes. Paying exorbitantly higher fees may be out of your financial means. Additionally, higher fees do not guarantee better quality.

9. Discipline

It is important to note that your child is surrounded by good people at his school, in terms of faculty, staff, other students. The child should receive good discipline in how to conduct himself properly. this should not have shameful past incidents which can pose a threat to your child’s future. Your child should be comfortable in his means while attending school and not keep comparing his materialistic belongings with his fellow classmates. This reiterates the point that higher fees do not guarantee better quality.
